Urgency in a family case: which question needs assessment first?
Urgency is not a single fixed category. An unsafe situation needs different help from a dated procedural document or an urgent dispute about a child, home or contribution. This guide organises facts and questions for suitable support. It does not decide whether your case qualifies for urgent proceedings or establish a general statutory response period. Have specific documents and events assessed promptly by a lawyer.

Recognise three different types of urgency
The first is immediate danger to someone. In the Netherlands call 112. Veilig Thuis is available on 0800-2000 for advice on domestic violence or concerns about a child. Do not wait in an unsafe situation for a lawyer’s general callback appointment. Emergency help and legal preparation may both be needed but have different purposes.
The second is a legal date in a letter, summons or procedural document. The third is an announced event such as a care change or housing problem. Calling something urgent yourself does not automatically make it suitable for urgent proceedings. A lawyer assesses concrete facts, possible routes and timely action.
Create a fact sheet about the event
Write what happened or was announced, when, the intended implementation date and supporting documents. Keep observation and expectation separate. “My ex is moving” is less clear than a factual overview of the proposal, children involved, stated date and existing agreements or orders.
Also mention your own actions and responses received. A professional can then identify missing information more precisely. The fact sheet need not argue that you are entirely right. Its purpose is a checkable starting point for advice so necessary questions do not disappear in a lengthy relationship chronology.
Provide existing agreements and decisions immediately
A parenting plan, settlement, order or earlier provisional decision may matter. Do not send only an extract supporting your interpretation; identify the relevant document and version. Ask which complete papers the lawyer needs and use the agreed secure delivery route.
An existing decision does not automatically change because someone feels urgency or circumstances shift. Do not decide you may ignore care arrangements, payments or other obligations. Immediate danger makes safety paramount, but discuss legal implications and necessary follow-up too. A general tool cannot replace case-specific advice.
Distinguish temporary clarity from final resolution
During separation, temporary clarity about housing, care or a contribution may be needed. A lawyer can explain whether provisional measures or another route fit. Not every practical issue is solved through the same procedure. The approach depends partly on relationship type, topics and case stage.
A temporary agreement or decision is not automatically final division. Ask which period is covered, what remains open and how follow-up is organised. This avoids treating an interim measure as resolving all ownership, authority or maintenance questions forever.
Connect urgent financial issues to concrete information
For money questions, list due payments, available resources and existing agreements. Clarify whether the issue concerns living costs, housing, child expenses or unpaid contributions. Who ultimately receives assets is not always the same question as how this month’s bill gets paid.
A fictional example: a dispute about future home-sale proceeds does not automatically resolve a mortgage instalment due now. Identify that distinction and seek targeted advice. Reversing transactions or moving money to apply pressure may create new problems. Have suitable practical and legal actions assessed for your position.
Prepare first contact so urgency is identifiable
When making an appointment, immediately mention the concrete date or event. Ask about the lawyer’s availability and relevant expertise. Registration or a general contact form does not promise immediate case acceptance. Use several suitable search routes if necessary without sending confidential documents to random addresses.
Bring the fact sheet, key documents and a short question list. Ask who does what, when a response can be expected and what to do if circumstances change earlier. Discuss engagement and costs too. Aid or insurance requires assessment; urgency does not automatically eliminate every cost.
Record follow-up and prevent new misunderstanding
After the meeting record the agreed step, responsible person and missing information. Check which interim arrangements apply. Forward new documents or dates through the agreed route. Old advice may depend on facts that have since changed.
Use these tools to organise information, not as a place that receives an emergency report. They send no information and notify no lawyer or authority. Use emergency services for immediate danger; an urgent legal issue needs actual confirmed contact with an appropriate professional.
Practical checklist
- Identify emergency help, a legal deadline or an announced event.
- Create a fact sheet with dates, consequences and evidence.
- Mention existing orders, plans and agreements immediately.
- Ask which interim and final issues are treated separately.
- Check whether the professional can actually accept the case.
- Keep confirmed actions, responsibilities and the route for changes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit an urgent request through a tool?
No. Tools process answers only in the browser and submit nothing. Ask a lawyer which route fits and use 112 for immediate danger in the Netherlands.
Is every family matter with a short date urgent litigation?
Not automatically. The event, papers, statutory requirements and possible procedure need assessment. Mention the date at first contact and have its significance checked.
Does an interim decision finalise the divorce?
Not automatically. Provisional measures and final settlement can cover different topics and periods. Ask what has and has not been decided.
May I stop paying while waiting for advice?
Do not conclude that from this guide. Agreements, orders and your financial position may matter. Seek targeted advice before changing obligations unilaterally.
